| Can i just post pictures on this site without submitting to challenges to get people to tell me what they think of them? |

If you already have them hosted somewhere, you can link to them. The other option would be to become a member here, so you get space for your own portfolio.
Both totally acceptable and done a lot around here.

| So since I don't have any pictures posted elsewhere, I would need to become a member in order to do so here right? I'm in no way even close to being very good with my camera, but I love using it and taking photos and think I have some decent pictures. Once I become a member can I also post older pictures that I have taken? Thanks for your time and input my friend. |

Sure, you're welcome.
I have my stuff over at pbase.com. A very user friendly, easy to set up site that allows you to upload tons of pictures (300MB are US$23 per year) that you can then link to:
//www.pbase.com/danieandbruce/image/31051857/medium
or, however not on this site, as direct linking is a members' only feature and only works, as far as I know, with pictures from DPC portfolios or challenges, even embedd, just by adding ".jpg" to the URL as used above:
//www.pbase.com/danieandbruce/image/31051857.jpg

Until you become a member you could always host your photos at one of the free sites and link to them.
