I was just outside and noticed what appeared to be 3 stars clustered very close together... caught my eye because I've never seen them before... I continued to watch them and noticed the 2 lower right stars moving ever so slowly... well it wasnt 10 seconds later the 2 lower objects started to glow really bright then faded away.... well I continued to watch the higher of the 3 to the left and it began moving upward and getting faint (harder to see) next it explodes and takes on the shape of a reflection, somewhat looks like an eye but ringed outwardly... then twinkles and you could see fragments falling very briefly but the ring/explosion remained for about another 20 seconds or so.... went right in to see if it was a launch and maybe it would be on the news.... no word as to what this was.. I tried to draw it out in the pic below

Appears to be a nova or pulsar that has exploded.
Then again, maybe we shot down one of those dang asteroids about to crash into Earth.

That picture looks similar to some kind of missile test. I used to be in the Navy, and that is exactly what we would see after sending up a clone and then firing on it.
I can't really say that is what it exactly was, but your picture definitely fits the description.

I'm in South Carolina, and I happened to see it, too. I didn't see three lights, I saw one at first, but it seemed to have a glowing wake, so I shielded my eyes from the streetlights to take a better look, then saw a brilliant flash, like one of those fireworks that explodes into hundreds of "streamers". After that, I could discern two lights traveling approximately the same direction, but the trailing light was slightly slower. I watched them for a good five or ten minutes, and I could still see them fairly well. Couldn't estimate the altitude, since I don't know what it was, but if the apparent movement was any indication, they were really a ways up there. If anyone figures this out, I'd be interested to know what it was. |

it couldn't be eighter of those two and leave debree falling my gess is although sometimes u hear a plan (military jet) u can sometimes spot them based on the reflection of sun light off them high in the atomsphere. I bet it was some kind test as vince31874 sugested possibly to fighter planes and a dummy that was set to be destoried.......but i would not know for sure.......the 1 thing i can say for sure is that it WAS NOT ANYTHING ASTORLOGICAL...........
the only thing i could have been then would be a moon or sun dog but those are very clear and only appear aroung the sun or moon +not debree

Yes! Thank you! Butterfly, I'd be in the same boat. I've been sitting here thinking about it while I was watching TV, wondering what it could have been. Now I feel special because I witnessed a piece of space exploration history... |

The headline on the CNN article should answer your question.

that must be what the 2 lower lights were , probably the 2 solid rocket boosters detaching then the larger one was the Titan making tracks then dropping its rocket would explain the bursts of light etc... |

I don't trust CNN either. I did check for corroborating stories but did not post them since they didn't add significant new information.
If you like, here is a brief list of corroborating news sources.
