Carlsbad, California ? If yes, I just shot the "flower fields" there today. I have many images.

I was just there a little over a month ago. My best friend lives there, and I've visited a couple of times. The photo opportunities are endless. I would highly suggest a visit to White Sands, but only if it's slightly overcast, or near sunrise/sunset - otherwise it is too bright. If you're going to be in the Alamogordo area, try to make it up to Ruidoso and/or Cloudcroft in the mountains. The drive alone is worth the trip. Below is a link to a pic I took last month on the way up towards Cloudcroft of an old train trestle. Breathtaking. Enjoy your trip to the Tularosa Basin!!

These are some images from the "Flower Fields" in Carlsbad, CA.
I did not get a response from you, but I am proudly displaying these just in case this is one of your destinations.

Incidently, the Trinity Site will be open April 2...one of only three opportunities per year. It is on the north side of White Sands Missile Range. Take the San Antonio (NM) exit east from I-25. Be sure to eat at the Owl Cafe and order a green chile cheeseburger and some of their homemade chocolate cake! You will also be very near the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife preserve. There are probably still thousands of birds there.

Also in the neighborhood is the Very Large Array - quite interesting. You may remember it from "Contact" (the large "dishes"). Here are a couple of photos...let's hope that if you go there that it isn't as windy a the day I went...50+mph...that is why the dishes are all pointing straight up - to minimize the surface area exposed.

Just rented Buick Le Sabre with XM radio and ready to go :-)

Hey Bill, I like your recommendations for New Mexico, keep'em coming. We vacationed there last spring and plan to return this summer. I visited VLA for a day also and got some nice pics (one in my portfolio under astronomy).

Are the observatories at Cloudcroft worth visiting (Apache and the Solar Telescope?)? We plan to spend time in southern NM this year.

John, I haven't spent too much time in Southern NM, but did work in the Silver City area for a couple of summers. It is an interesting town, and the Gila Wilderness is just north of there. Of course, there is always Carlsbad Caverns.I don't know about the Cloudcroft observatories, but I'd like to check them out myself.

Northern NM is my favorite area in the state.

So far so good,Alamogordo area is very cute,and bars are friendly :-)
Snow storm at Tucumcarithis morning almost ruined the fun !

Reviving an old thread... my wife and I recently went on a quick 2.5 day tour of southern New Mexico. What a great place to visit! Here are some shots of Carlsbad caverns

And for goodness sake, if you're coming all the way over here in the cold months you had better go to Bosque del Apache and do sunrise with the birds (just south of Socorro)

I've been in the desert south of Socorro once before - they have Univ of New Mexico desert research base or something there which is sometimes used for small workshops.

lovely shot with moon and yucca!

I wish I could see the white sands at night, but the only way to do it was to camp at the park overnight, and we were not prepared for that.
