| 09/09/2011 07:40:35 AM | Milky Way Over Banner Peak by BaldurTComment: I dove into night sky photography not too long ago, and had the privilege to toy with a 5D MkII with a Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5. Did you use any of the in-camera noise reduction for high ISO or long exposure? Perhaps the skies I dealt with were the limiting factor, but I mainly shot with ISO 3200, F3.5-4.0, 60". This exposure setting is a variation of Jim Richardson's of Nat'l Geographic, on his commentary on shooting the Milky Way. Shots came out fairly clear, and obviously better than my T1i, but still not as clear as I would've liked. With the Milky Way shots, I turned off all in-camera noise reduction, and shot a dark frame to subtract the noise in post process, then did minor curve adjustments in GIMP. Some noise reduction was applied in Digital Photo Professional prior to converting to 16-bit TIF. Excellent shot, and thanks in advance!! Night sky photography is very rewarding.
Apparently, I can't post my website on here, so please email me at depthofreal@gmail.com, and I'd like to discuss the details a little further. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

I tried capturing one in flight while it was hovering in place, but that was extremely difficult!! I did not originally intend for this to be a high key image, but when I previewed the first few shots, in order to bring out the detail in the insect, I had to tack on more EVs, which of course, started to light up the background, but I was just amazed at the detail the lens was able to capture (cropping even more revealed the texture of the compound eyes). I didn't want to ruin it by having my subject blacked out. Thanks again! |

No, this was a single exposure. Because it was so dark outside, I could stand in front of the camera for a long period of time and not get exposed. I took advantage of that and used an external flash to light parts of me in various locations. I actually had a different idea in mind, but similar to this, but didn't have time. |

I had thought about a square crop, but wanted to include the water; although the water appeared more out of focus than I would have liked. I do enjoy long exposures, and this was fun to experiment with. Thanks again! |
