I like the shot but personally I'd either have sharpened up the house by closing down a bit, or blown it all out by opening up a bit...but in between is neither, in that she's in focus but the house isn't - but it is enough in focus to distract from the subject. I like the composition a lot...the tones are really nice and it works well in contrasty b&w.

You keep on pushing that envelope...that's where the real art is, imho and what I'm striving for (nowhere close yet). You gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette, or however that terrible cliche goes :)

You'd be amazed how useful a pen is out in the field - but in the days before EXIF data all exposure info had to be written down frame by frame if you were experimenting, so a pen and book were more than essential. Plus don't you get ideas out on the road whilst waiting for long exposures to finish? I do...so a pen and book is essential :)

Wow! I'm blown away this didn't at least reach a 6. The sheer volume of 1-4s pretty much indicates how strongly the DPC voters feel about the religious implications. Staggering. It's a woman reading the bible in just about a shirt - what's so blasphemous or distasteful about that? There is nothing sexual about the piece, explicitly or implicitly. She is merely reading a bible. Had the shot not shown 5mm of almost nipple then I doubt anyone would have blinked an eyelid, but ooooh there's just the tiniest bit of nipple. The naked body is not always some kind of pornographic or sexual device and calling it out in this manner is crying wolf on my planet. I'm sorry but to find this offensive on a photography site is really closed minded and in my opinion completely contrary to the photographic and creative process....and is really disappointing.

I love the idea of the child with a teddy but I think getting closer in, maybe shooting landscape rather than portrait, would have brought the girl more into the shot whilst still conveying the abandoned context for more impact.

Beautiful shot but the building looks way too clean and unharmed to convey abandonment.

Great shot. Gorgeous skies, the railway lines leading the eye, and the large tiered building with plenty of smashed windows for interest and to convey abandonment. Excellent stuff and great job on the pp.
