Untill there was you...by auiComment: This is a nice, casual portrait but I don't understand how it represents serendipity. High marks for the overall image, low marks for nailing the theme. |

Walking the Pathby danh669Comment: Another obviously staged moment. If I came across this photograph with no heading, and no theme in mind, I would still know it was staged. The composition might have been interesting if the subject was wearing more brightly colored pants. |

Yellow Swallowtails Dancingby pmichaudComment: This photo had possibilities but there is not enough contrast in terms of value. I like the strong shadows their wings have created but the photo is too monochromatic to be really striking. |

The Flea Market: Serendipity Definedby Prof_FateComment: I get the idea the photographer was trying to represent. One definitely finds plenty of serendipitous moments at a flea market. However, this boring shot isn't one of them. All I see is three guys talking over a box of bags. There isn't much to their expressions to indicate that anything delightful is taking place. The composition is distracting. My eye keeps wandering to the guy's butt in the background and that white blur at the corner. Message edited by author 2004-04-28 01:36:26. |

To find a Lucky Pennyby xvalensxComment: Maybe I'm misunderstanding this challenge but here is another obviously staged photo. Yes, it represents an idea, I guess but as a photo standing on its own the message is pretty obtuse. As for the technical merit of the photo, it is a nice close-up of a penny but I don't see much in the way of composition. It's boring. Message edited by author 2004-04-28 01:49:26. |

Whow!!! Reese's under the bed!by artvetComment: I'm not sure what's going on here. My initial response was, "Huh?". Once I understood the idea that she is looking under the bed for a book (I think) and has found an old box of candy my next thought was it is so obviously staged that it just doesn't count. By my way of thinking, one can't stage a serendipidous event. This is a very dishonest photo. |

Surpriseby alexvoloComment: This doesn't cut it. It lacks imagination and it does not truly capture a serendipidous moment. |

Along Came A Rainbowby Polar7Comment: Taking on faith it wasn't manipulated, this photo represents Serendipity perfectly. The photo itself is pretty and rather interesting but doesn't quite gel completely for me. |

Gas Stopby sixgunwoodyComment: This is a very strong image in terms of the silouhettes and long shadows it presents. It is visually interesting but it also tells a story. This guy (and perhaps the photographer) are on a road trip that will include some biking (maybe in some difficult terrains?). They are fueling up for a long, possibly dangerous trek. I like the nearly monochromatic feel of the image. The only spots of color are in the faded blue of the sky and the yellow of the graffiti on the side of the VW bus. |
