I will have to agree in liking the crop more than the original. I feel the reeds frame this photo a lot better when it is cropped like this.

In response to the HDR, I feel that it was done tastefully, but it looks like it is just a little more gray all the way around than I would expect, not sure exactly why that is (and I am fairly new to HDR). I don't believe this is a saturation issue because other parts look like they have great saturation. Hopefully that made sense, I am not sure how to better describe it.

Biggest complaint with this photo personally is the white balance. It looks like it should be on a white background, it may not have been. I would put it on a rich colour like a blue, or purple to contrast the medals.

Out of focus decreases what otherwise could have been a much better photo. Also the mergers with the arms of the two people on the side look unintentional.

Too noisy for my taste, it distracts from the image. Further more such a simple part shows no connection to any interesting subject. But at the same time it is not simple enough to be abstract. If it was less noisy and sharper it could possibly begin to start looking good in an abstract sense, if that is what you were going for.

Shame the main subject is shaded when the background has a nice exposure to it. Would have improved the photo better than any other single aspect.

Did you do an unsharp mask after resizing? It looks like it still needs one applied, maybe it needs to be applied to a greater extent?
