Fragile Mortality by cmeierComment: 77ltd, they were normal 120v bulbs. the wires were all attached in parallel and then attached to an extension cord with built-in lamp dimmer.
check out a view of the wiring here. i doubt it would meet electrical code!
i never ran the lights at anything close to full brightness, though, and only for a few seconds at that. they were very, very dim during the exposure.

Fragile Mortality by cmeierComment: wow, daniel, i hadn't seen your image before, but clearly all art is derivative! i wasn't able to find unfrosted bulbs; but i think yours works very well.
i note that deapee's 'illuminate' entry in 'illusions ii' continued the trend of standing bulbs on their end.
it will be interesting to see what others will do with them next!

Fragile Mortality by cmeierComment: hi everyone,
thanks to all who commented on this image both during and after the challenge. i know that the ‘personification’ aspect of this entry wasn’t entirely obvious, but the comments i received tell me that many of you understood completely what i was trying to convey here, and this is truly gratifying to me!
setting up all the bulbs was a fair amount of work, and i would be happy to elaborate on the process if desired. the most difficult aspect was getting the exposure just right, as minute changes in the lighting tended to completely change the mood of the shot.
here̢۪s an outtake that, to me anyway, feels very different:
also i would like to extend my congratulations to the ribbon winners and my respect to many others in this challenge who submitted such excellent work.
