Definitely f4 is too shallow. I backlit my recent shots with (1) 430ex @ 1/16th power. Camera was set to f11 iso200. If you look at shots by irenem, she's using f16.

These are looking much better than your first attempts. I really like the colours your experimenting with.

You should add your photo info like f-stop and iso. That way, it's easier to get advice. Looks like you need more DOF in these. I tried f6.3 at first and it was too shallow and tried f11 last night which was a lot better.
