Waiter! My soup appears to be half empty... or is it half full? Well I hope the existential steak's good!

Thanks Vivian. I'd enjoy hearing any of your stories! I was too young to remember the collapse of the Soviet Union, although an ex of mine was Ukrainian and grew up during those times, she had some pretty harrowing (as well as many good) accounts from when she was a child. It was interesting to hear someone's experiences first hand like that.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment, I'm pleased some people really liked it, I was regretting entering this at first until the positive comments started coming in. Thanks John, Robert and Don for coming back and commenting after the challenges ended also, it's nice knowing I've produced something people have given a second look.

I'm guessing here you know you have a compelling photo yet wanted to enter it somewhere. But IMO it's not abstract and must vote accordingly. I bet this would look great in B&W.

Actually before entering this challenge I looked up abstract photography on several sites (here, 1x, flickr, google images...) to get a better idea of what classifies as abstract, as well as checking the dictionary definition - to me this seemed to fit fine. It was only after I saw everyone else's entries and my score plummeting that I realised I was mistaken.
