A little more attention to the background i.e. remove the clutter would have helped, and maybe a portrait crop. The square crop is interesting, however as your background is messy it detracts rather than adds to the image.
Even though I suspect you have used on camera flash, the light coming from the back left of the photo enhances the outline. Getting down to eye level is also good.

Its a grey cat centered in a square. Sharper focus or less-flat lighting would make this stand out.
