Too intentionally arty for my personal tastes. An angle looking into the coffee cup to emphasize the liquid, or brighter lighting on the liquid, or leaving it colour, would have worked better with your title. I don't care for how dim the lighting is on the objects being shown; it says 'abandoned' to me, which may seem an odd thing to draw from it, but there ya have it.

The silhouette idea is good. The composition is a little too regular - maybe move the pencil holder partially behind the cup. The structure in the background is a little distracting.

background has too much light for my tastes. Shot is a little grainy. Nice composition

I think that this would have been a nice picture without the coffee cup. I like the texture of the background and the placement of the pencils in the holder. The coffee cup just doesn't seem to fit and appears ackward to me.

Well I'm not going to make excuses for this one, I can certainly see peoples POV on why it may not be interesting and hence not voted highly on. In case anyone should come back to look at this I'll say a few things...

As I say in the first comment it's a bit of kit from work, TBH i dont even know what its for myself but I thought that since it was such an unusual piece it might be good to use in a macro shot. Then when duotones came about and light, shape and texture became important factors I thought I'd use this. I unfortunately don't have any DOF control on my camera so couldnt get the whole subject in focus in the position I had it, if anyone has any tips on how to get added DOF control on cameras where its not a manual option I'd greatly appreciate sharing the knowledge.

I think I've learned something from taking my shot and seeing the others entered, hopefully this will lead me to improve in the future.

I think I would like to see DOF a bit larger, mainly the bolt and nut on the right. Lighting is great

Somewhat of an uninteresting subject, but a good setup.

Interesting choice of shade for this -- I would have tended to think of a bluer tone for the 'cold' part but the greenish tinge actually works quite well.

Nice shades and textures, but the tone seems to be missing a true black. This causes the shot to lose a lot of snap.
