Greeting from the Critique Club

Composition - I like the color contrasts in this shot, but as a whole, I don't find the subject terribly interesting or compelling. I think your placement of subject in the frame is very good. I don't have a lot to say about the composition of this shot.

Technical - This is a tough shot to get just right. The contrast is cool, but almost too much to be able to properly expose the foreground and the background at the same time. The subject is a bit underexposed and the background is a little overexposed. To properly expose one leaves the other too bright or too dark. Its a no win situation. The other thing about this photo is that it is not terribly clear. With a 1/40 sec exposure, I can understand why. That's a fairly long exposure to handhold.

Overall - The best advice I can give on this one is to match up your background and foreground a little more so both can be more properly exposed. The other thing is that would've immediately improved this picture would be shooting off a tripod to steady the camera and most importantly, the image. You can pull off a not so exciting image if you take it well enough, but this one is a little short of that. Good Luck in future challenges. - Bob

The contrast between the red flowers and the yellow leaves is wonderful.

That being said, if I were to see this picture without any knowledge of the challenge topic, I would not have guessed "science".

Exceptionally well composed image. The color difference between ypur primary subject and the background helps make this an outstanding entry. Good use of DOF.

Comment by Dave Gordon:
The contrast between the color of the hive and the background is brilliant - a great angle for the picture, and the lighting brings out the color contrasts.
