My apologies for the lateness of my comment...

I think this is a very good photojournalistic photo. The mood and feel of the scene documented works well. I'm not sure I'd change anything about it.

I like this image a lot actually. I like the smoker's pose and how the guy in the back with the baseball cap seems to be looking at her. Your processing is great also. A couple things i'll comment on just because i can are that I would have cropped a little closer on the left leaving the black thing at the top left of the frame out and also the stones on the wall right behind your subject seem a little too sharp or too bright, not sure what, they seem to take attention away from your subject. Then again, those are really minor things that probably don't matter, I just wanted to leave something you could think about instead of just saying i liked the picture. Hope this helped

Hi Ian, here's a critique for you...
The wide aperture does a reasonable job of seperating the foreground from the background, but to help this further, you could lighten the lady and darken the background a little. The high-contrast isn't really working in the foreground, and she looks like a newspaper printed cutout stuck onto the street.

It looks like the background is artificially blurred by editing. This shot would have been better taken at f/2.8 to get some genuine DOF blur, although you probably wouldn't get as much seperation as this unless you have a 5D with an 85 f/1.2 lens. :) Anyway, I like the feel you were going for.

Perfect example of photo journalism work. Nice tones and a perfect choice to go b/w.

Great composition. Love the B&W. Not sure about her face. Is it over PP'd? It looks a bit like a mask as if it's been too post-processed.

What makes this interesting is what makes it different. A spiral fire escape is so out of the ordinary, that its presence already pops this shot. Then seeing three alcoves that obviously used to be windows is another odd element. The two together, makes for a visually stimulating shot. Thank you.
