Hi Kim,
This is a good effort, especially considering how new you are to tools like curves. Time and practise will go a long way. Given that this was an Advanced Editting challenge I would recommend you spend tiem really drawign those eyes and lashes out - focuing on the detail. This tutorial is brilliant: linky.
Otherwise I think thi shot drew out 12 comments during voting, which is pretty good going. The points made below are pretty useful and are worth paying attention to. I think the blow-outs at the top are the biggest distraction from all that is good in the shot.

I tend to like to see eye contact in a portrait. This moves into the candid type of photography to me.
