First Impressions
First impression I had when I viewed this during voting was: Challenge misinterpretation. I gave this a 2 and felt that it didn't meet the Challenge -
"For this challenge, you should find or set up a scene where seemingly unrelated objects are positioned in such a way that they blend together to create a seemingly fluid scene. As an example, see DougPaz's "Back" Cover Girl."
Photograph Information, Technicals & Composition Review
Good shot of these aircraft (Challenge subject aside for a moment). Being so centered, there could be more interest added by a variation in composition, especially with the whiter cloud area creeping into frame bottom left.
From your Photographer's Comments I see that you knew this might not meet the Challenge. I can see the 'position' aspect/interpretation, but the Challenge was about the 'clever photographic composition and placement' to create a layered type image.
Comments, Score & Placement Review
30/42 is fairly low down the pack, but a score of 5.06 is quite good, considering the Challenge description.
Only a couple of your commenters seemed to have the Challenge a high priority when viewing/voting, which might also explain your average score from them of 6.87. One comment seems quite helpful regarding your composition.
Summary
Maybe a shot of these two at a different angle, showing them 'morphing' in some way may have enabled you to have a strong contender for this Challenge, otherwise this is one of the statistics of 'DNMC'. Always like it when I can see the pilot in the cockpit, so I like that aspect (and the shark nose) of the Warthog and nice shot of the motion of the propeller on the shiny Mustang.
