Comment by shutterpuppy:
as a portrait of the guy, this is okay. but it seems that an engagement photo should have both parties in focus, or focus on the woman. composition and lighting seem a little flat as well. 4.

I would have liked this a great deal more with better lighting on both faces. Nice pose and set up, but her face is too dark

The DOF works well to isolate the gentleman however with him looking at the camera I feel that there is no connect between him and the lady and the background.

That's interesting. Usually an "engagement" picture focuses on her. I like the composition

I'm not sure this is what you intended, but . . .

By isolating the man with DOF, you have made him the main subject. He is engaged with the viewer of the photograph, not with the woman. The woman, on the other hand, is looking at the man. Did you mean to be saying that men look out from relationships and women look within them?

If these two people are engaged to be married, the photograph seems to be saying that the man is the important person to the outside world and that the role of the woman is to remain in the background.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Conclusion: The rule is simple - when the subject is not very unique (like in this case), you really need to do something different in terms of capture angle and post-processing to make your image different from regular shots. Overall this is an average composition. Wish you good-luck and better scores for future submissons. You have got some real good piece of equipment which when complimented with 'interesting' subject can do wonders.

As one of the comments says - the composition is messy. There are too many things in the frame. Maybe just the cup, with some steam coming out, in foreground of plain background would have hightlighted the subject and made the image more 'neat'. Wish you better score and good-luck for future submissions.

I'm by no means expert in area of photography. My comments are purely based on my limited understanding of technology and art behind digital photography. Apart from doing detailed evaluation of your submission, my intent is to learn different styles of photography by critically evaluating selective submissions. If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via email or PM.

Wish you a great day!
