I know the challenge was "dead end" but some of the photos in this challenge are truly just ugly. This being one of them. You did meet the challenge though.

I did used my husbands drill to make the holes. Then I stuffed christmas lights inside of each hole so that I could get a better light.

Fits the challenge and I think there is an image there that would be more impactfull. I think this might have been the wrong lens/angle for the job. The color and the focus are spot on. I also like the creativity and direction you were going with this idea. The border works with the shot, but maybe some level adjustments and midtone/shadow adjustments would have bettered the image. Nice job

Selective focus does not work well when shooting oceans, large areas of sand, or in this case salt. I think you could of used some better lighting as well. I like the clarity though, and with some minor touchup and camera setting tweaks, you might have an interesting composition...
