This has become rather flat - I don't get much sense of depth from this lighting - everything's pretty bright and full on, rather than using a graduation of shading across the set-up.

A little over sharpened on the bristles, gives it a fake look. And the blown out lighting masks what might be a visually interesting juncture of the bristles with the paint.

Comment by pahl:
Thanks for all the comments. I really enjoyed reading them.

The photo is not really a X-ray.

I took the baitcaster (fishing reel) and removed the side plate.
I then removed the spool from the inside so I could see the gears.

I set the shot up. Turned the lights off.
The room was pitch black. I set the camera self timer. The shutter opened for 6 seconds.

Then I took a manual flash that I just held in my hand and flashed the reel from one side. Then I removed the side plate from the baitcaster and flashed it from the other side. All before the shutter closed.

I used paint shop pro 8 one step photo fix to auto adjust color and sharpness.

Then I used the "Negative Image" button to get what you see now.

I did try to place it on a diagonal as I thought it would look better with the fishing rod, but I just could not seem to make it work without the reel being so much smaller looking in the photo.

I took about 8 photo's of the reel and this one turned out the closest to what I had in mind.

There are a number of things I would do different next time for a photo like this.

I'm very happy with my 61st place being this is my first challenge.

Thanks again,

Very unusual image. It almost looks like an old drawing of a mechanical item. The colors work very well for me.
