Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge

This is a lovely snowy landscape brought to life by the foreground skier and distant figures. A great composition, the placing of the skier works really well. The only thing that doesn't work for me is the foreground in the right corner it just feels as though the skier is about to come to grief in it. I like the diagonal of the flag-posts and the dynamic reds of the flags. Exposure-wise I love the whites of this difficult exposure you've brought the snow out nice and white without losing too much detail except in the sky which may be what snaffles is referring to. You could lose the bulk of that sky and its poor detail by cropping close to the mountain tops, the more I look at it with my suggested crop the more I like it, I think you would end up with an even better image. Thanks for a great entry Camelia, well done.

Grand action shot. I always wonder about these folk who use only one ski!

Hello from the Critique club

An appealing image that meets the challenge well.

As Aimee says, ‘what a great find’. These sort of places are an endless source of fascination, anticipation and surprise. I like the creative way you have approached the subject by introducing a deliberate angle but a crop would improve it. The telegraph pole on the right is superfluous and distracting and we don’t really need any sky above. A crop that includes the 140 sign at the bottom right but excludes the pole, you would need to clone out the two power lines from it, and removing the top to just below the weatherboard, in my mind, improves the end result. If you do that I would also clone out the two spotlights at the top of the frame or else they would then become distracting, you could also ease the detail out in the foreground with a little dodging.

Thanks for an interesting entry Camelia

Hello from the Critique club

An appealing image that partially meets the challenge

What a wonderful array of pins, staples, screws and nails it makes for a great study especially against the lovely texture of the wood. By choosing to introduce a diagonal to the image you have sort of met part of the challenge but I do not get any sense of unease because the image is too compact and has no external reference points such as a horizon. I think you missed an opportunity here to go in very close with a wide angle lens so that you could emphasise all these interesting features but also include the receding pole at an angle together, probably, with some horizon too this would I think have been a lot nearer the challenge brief. As regards the whites they look blown and once that has happened there simply is no data to do anything with, do try to avoid blowing the highlights with some minus exposure compensation.

Thank you for your interesting entry Camelia
