Comment by ldrider51:
The sky was totally overcast, the scene dark, the sky wasn't blown in the photo. HDR was used properly, with 6 exposures over a wide range, and the HDR processing done to faithfully recreate the lighting as I saw it with my eyes, with the exception of a bit of oversaturation to bring up some of the contrasting colors.

The subject matter was an attempt to portray the expansiveness of the development, the size of the hole in the side of the hill. Unfortunately, that didn't translate well to the small format. Bad choice on my part.

Thanks for all the positively presented criticisms.

I would have liked to see more detail in the sky.

Interesting lines of the road. The image seems somewhat low-contrast, probably suffers from low-light. More light during day would probably be better since the overcast or twilight sky hasn't given you nice color. Maybe your conditions were severe, as you photo doesn't show much dynamic range, e.g., recovered by HDR.

All very good comments. I blew this one, twice - I noticed the scene as we were getting ready to leave my in-laws' home. Quickly set up the tripod, metered it, and pushed the button on the electronic remote release. Prior to taking the pic, I made only a small adjustment to the scene, moving an item from between the candle and the fire screen. Didn't even notice the label on the jar until I checked the photo on the computer. Blowing it a second time, I hurried it, doing minimal post processing sitting in a chair in their living room and then uploaded it to DPC.

Afterwards, too late for the challenge, I improved it and posted it to my portfolio. See it here: //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=424147

If I was to be brutally frank, I'd say there is nothing in this picture that suggests HDR was used at all. It's flat, dull and pointless. It looks like it was taken on a camera phone through a dirty window.
Luckily I'm not being frank, but I will say perhaps you didn't follow the HDR proceedure properly? Try looking for more dramatic skies or areas with greater dynamic range - after all that's what HDR is all about!

the development seems lost in this image, maybe a little closer, since the road seems more important..need a little more dynamic range.

The sky feels a bit bright for my taste here. Also, there's no real point of interest in this photo. 6

Good effort on using HDR to bring out the trees in the background without blowing out the brighter portions. However, the image really isn't all that pretty and is a little dark

Considering the use of HDR the image is a little too flat for me. Could have used more detail in the sky.

This seems a little tonally flat and lifeless, but I do like the diagonal and s-curve lines made by the roads. I think with different lighting (sunrise/set, perhaps?) the scene would be more appealing.
