Re: Description
Give us your best interpretation of geology (the scientific study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth).
100% of the items in this composition = GEOLOGY!
1.The River Rock with the hole in it = GEOLOGY!
2.The thousands of grains of sand = GEOLOGY!
3.The Gold Nugget (5 pennyweight) = GEOLOGY!
4.The $1.00 Gold piece (1893)= GEOLOGY!
5.The ring is made of Gold = GEOLOGY!
6.The Diamond in the ring = GEOLOGY!
7.The Terra Cotta tile the composition is sitting on is made of rock = GEOLOGY! |
Tim - You are right that every component of your entry relates to things coming from the earth (i.e. geologic materials). I think what happened with your entry is that it seems more an entry in a scavenger hunt completion.
The composition of your photo seems a bit static to me - a whole rock centered with three objects placed on it). In addition, while I think we all realize that diamonds and gold and copper come from the earth (geology), the coin and the ring seem out of sorts with the rest of the earthy feel of the shot.
Maybe a different approach with the gold nugget (the raw) and the ring (the refined) by themselves as a macro to emphasize how man has utilized the fruits of the earth for beauty etc. may have worked better here.
Finally, the image seems to lack lighting and composition to really highlight the components of the shot. The flat lighting at the top seems to prevent the rock from separating from the the tile, the harsh lighting on the right seems to blow out the details of the ring and nugget, the saturation seems to be muted - boosting the reds really add to the earthy feel of the terra cotta tile, and the sharpness and contrast could be boosted.
Here is a quick edit (i hope you don't mind) with a slight sat boost, an adjustment of contrast using USM and a quick sharpen.
I think this edit still lacks a bit from scoring very high in the challenge due to the composition considerations above.
Sorry for the long post, but I can empathize with your thought process and questioning why your score is low. I felt a comment or two (or twenty) might be useful.
Cheers,
Peter
