very sharp focus and good control on the DoF. I'd like this better if you got closer and filled the frame with the apples or even parts of the apples or backed up and showed more of the whole scene.

What a great idea! You have to look carefully to figure out the problem.
Technically, you have good lighting, nice composition. I don't see an issue with the grain, so high iso and long shutter speed do not seem to be a problem.
It would have helped to use blemish correction to get rid of the white spots in the background - there are three just to the right of the bread, but as you look closer, there are lots of them.
The other issue is cultural. The bread does not look like bread to the US eye. If not for the sliced area where you can see the typical structure of bread... Well, to me, it looks like a round chunk of meat. It is also a lot darker than our typical breakfast breads. Until you understand what it is, it does not look appealing.
Do keep in mind that any average score above 5 shows that some people are rating your picture 6 and above.

to me the ear tags aren't distracting (I've worked wtih cattle alot, to me ear tags are supposed to be there) what I find more distracting is the post seemingly coming out of the head - maybe that is your distrating element - if so, your title is gonna loose you some point
