| 04/15/2012 01:40:30 PM | Grunge Who...?by mlianoprComment by Lydia: I totally LOVE this chicken! Since it's Expert editing, I wish you'd gotten rid of the green stuff and maybe just put nothing in there, or more of the dirt. As it is, the green stuff is so busy, that it makes it difficult to find the subject at first.
I LOVE that chicken! Look at his stance! Love!

Pity that this image didn't do better, as you have lovely golden tones in the sky and great silhouettes to work with. Problem is, from my point of view, is the vast expanse of black at the bottom of the page. For an entire third, there is nothing to look at. Now on the one hand it does help draw the eye to the punch of colour, but then...that's it. This is a highly competitive site, and Free Studies in particular are difficult to do well in. There needs to be something more here.
I see that you're a new member, so you may want to try this simple but effective exercise to help you get a better sense of what I mean. Choose a challenge (or several) and go through all the images...in reverse order. So start at the very end, with the DQs and bottom images, and work your way up to the ribbon winners.
Hope this helps, please keep on shooting and entering!
Feel free to PM me,

First thoughts:
Crazy colors, very vibrant. This makes the image very eye catching. Great expression, and the focus on the guitar is great. There is flare, but I think it works with the image.
Delving a bit deeper, for being blindly taken, this shot has some pretty nice things going for it compositionally. I like the placement of him and the guitar, but would prefer his hand not cropped off, but that's a minor issue and surely understandable given the not looking aspect of the shot. I particularly like the roof in the backgroud, however. It is a very interesting element and is placed at just the right place behind his head.
The light is harsh, but at the same time, it works as a decent rim light, separating your subject from the background, so I don't find the harshness problematic.
Overall, I think this is a pretty good example of shooting without looking, particularly considering the fact that you nailed the focus and were shooting a moving subject. |
