Ok. You asked......so here I go! Just looked through your portfolio and saw that you like action figures. Also saw the shots of a bride and your baby.....what extremes! Love the soft focus on the subject that are living. Understand the need for clarity on your product shots.

So here goes, IMHO>!

Cropped relatively well although perhaps the base should be straightened out. That would bother people, especially if they are trying to sell it. The figure already has an attitude that it carries, tilting the base does not add anything... doesn't have to, should be straight.

Something looks flat about the hair....almost cartoon like rather than a 3D figure. Maybe you could spot light the hair to highlight it? give it some depth?

I'm pretty sure those are the "real" colors but somehow if you amped the blacks a tad to get a true black somewhere in the shot it would give the depth you need. Same thing with the highlights? where are they? on the base as a reflection? I'd like to see some highlights more prominent on the figure.

I guess the feeling of it floating is a tad disconcerting......the action figure pix you have feel more solid. Do product shots HAVE to have a solid white background? Maybe it should actually be sitting on something? Just suggestions and questions...

As far as putting something like this in DPC challenges, I dont think people here score high on photographs of art works, ANY kind, unless they are challenge specific.

Now by this point you may have wondered who is she....(me!) her scores are all over the map. Some high....some...like this free study...right by you....that's how I found you......and actually felt like you wanted to hear from some people.

Good!!!!! Keep asking.....hopefully if you join forums and start a thread or two there may actually be some decent photogs that could give you professional advice. Seek and ye shall find. But beware...it's a jungle out there too. Not everyone is nice, so make sure you bring your sword! Be prepared for ANYTHING>>>>>>like I have heard it all....."quit photography NOW!!!" to "THAT should be in National Geographic or National Lampoon!" Does that still exist? LOLOLOL
Most of all Have fun! And ENJOY your family!!!!

Maybe a little bit more cropped out at the bottom and less at the top.. It makes it easier on the eye then.

Selection around the hairline to separate background is VERY wonky :-(

Definitely meets the challenge, and a strong mono conversion with a good tonal range. Composition makes the most of the scene, but at the end of the day, relatively uninteresting.

Comment by tanguera:
For me, this image is about a bunch of things lacking. The lighting is overly even, the bg is distracting (mostly because it is in the same tonal range as the rest of the image), and there is virtually no expression on the face. Although it is sharp, well-cropped, and yes, a portrait, it doesn't say anything to me.
