Pretty good depth of field for so close to such a small flower. Good but not a killer shot, though. Some selective editing tricks could help to pull some detail from the highlights and shadows. Keep in mind, however, that I'm not a huge fan of flower shots. I do love bugs and critters, however.

Nice...you may want to use a flash...even in the daylight...to get the shadow off the subject (flower) ! Good luck.

Hi E! Welcome to dpChallenge! I hope you are enjoying it so far ?? This is my favorite of all your daffodil photos. I love the fill the frame soft look for florals, and I like how you can see all the little dust pollens on the flower.

I guess you're figuring out already that people are not shy around here about constructive critique, huh? :) I think over my first 2 years with dpChallenge, probably the most significant thing I learned was how to toughen up my easily bruised skin :) But it was a good (if not often painful) thing, and I learned alot.

Goooood Luck to you and I look forward to seeing more of your photography!

I like in this shot how there is just enough going on in the background (BG) to see that the flower is not just all alone out in some garden somewhere. It's where it can be seen daily and enjoyed.
If you want to blur the BG in shots like this, try shooting manual, and at low iso, so that the aperture will open up. I almost always shoot flowers in manual mode, at EV -2/3, and brighten the shot later when I edit it. That brings out the textures in the petals without washing out the areas with one color being too strong.
Even in full daylight, I sometimes use flash to fill in the darker areas near the camera when shooting small items like this. A small reflector is even better, as it gives a more even and softer lighting to the subject.
I see that you shoot with a P&S, which makes some kinds of shooting a lot more challenging. I keep a Fuji A920 P&S with me almost all the time, and I get a lot of interesting shots that I would otherwise miss that way.
Welcome to DPC. I hope your time spent at the site will be all good.

I have to agree With both michaelmonn and riewis. When taking photo's of flower's try to go out early in the morning or later that evening when the light is not so harsh or carry a defuser (a piece of shade cloth). As far as cleaning the flower I use a make-up brush to clean off the flower.
