Ghost Jack O'Lanternby dr rickComment by glimpses: I arrived on this pic following the thread on "December rules".
I rarely comment on pics and I do it now, criticizing this one, because it is a bit of a shame that a potential good work did, IMHO, fail for a relatively simple matter.
The photo has many good points and I will not list them, because the author certainly knows them, having produced the photo.
However, the overall strength is reduced by the lack of contrast between the subject and the background.
You may have tried to increase or decrease the transparency of the subject but, especially considering that editing was allowed, you should have done something to increase the contrast between the subject and the background.

Goldfishby dr rickComment by dr rick: Thanks to all who left comments. One thing I like about this photo is the way the top of the fish blends into the background and seems flat but the bottom is distinctly three-dimensional. And centering the fish seems to accentuate the effect. But it's nice to know how it is perceived by others, so I really appreciate the comments. |

Stylishby dr rickComment by ahaze: Technical: fits the challenge. Exposure composition focus all pretty good, though I think having a more even background would have made this image stronger. Lighting is a bit harsh for me, it makes detail a little difficult to see in both the well lit and shadowed areas.
Personal: The subject is too busy for me in this image. Taken from different angles and with something diffusing the sunlight mighh have produced a stronger contender.
My vote: 4 |

Goldfishby dr rickComment by Konador: I think a less centered composition would have worked better here, and maybe a background which wasnt so similar in colour to the fish. |

Goldfishby dr rickComment by train: looks a bit static, nice colours, but it doesnt give much impression of water |

Goldfishby dr rickComment by dsidwell: When my friend was a kid, he had a goldfish as a pet. He would take it out if it's tank and 'pet' it every night. Every day, the fish would be dead when he went off to school, and his mom would replace it with a goldfish from the store! This went on for several weeks. It has nothing to do with your image, though, except that it concerns a goldfish! Your shot?" I like the clarity of the water here, and your fish is nicely in focus. I think having the rocks in focus, too, was a good idea. Have you experimented with this fish being off center or on a 'third?' |
