Hi! Here’s a comment from the Critique Club.

First Impression:
My eye drawn directly to the right eye, (dogs left)
Colour seems a bit off. Pinkish/orange

Composition:
The cropping is a little too tight. Can’t get a “candid” moment. Need to see more of the context, pose, tail, ears etcâ€Â¦

Subject:
Meets challenge, but I can see why you received some of the DNMC comments

Technical:
You didn’t make any processing comments, so I don’t know what you tried to do. DOF really shallow. Don’t know actual colour, but it looks a little “off”.

Summary:
Ok technically, but your composition made it hard for voters to get a “Candid” feeling. I have a couple dogs, so I know what you were trying to capture, but this “capture” doesn’t tell a story.

I'm not much for receiving or giving comments, but since Candids are
near and dear to my heart, I have decided to give comment on every entry
in this challenge.

Unfortunately, candids of animals are really not what I look for in a good candid. Animals are aware and both unaware at the same time of a photographer, nor do they care either way. Too easy, no comfort zone lost. It's a 2 for me.

I'm not sure how candid this is. I'd like to see the dog doing something unexpected or showing more expression. It is decent capture of its' eye, technically, but artistically this photo isn't showing me something special or unexpected about this particular dog. I expect a candid to reveal something to me, either something personal about the subject, or something that reflects a universal theme (like loneliness, love, friendship, etc). You know and love your dog so obviously you will see more in a portrait like this than a more objective viewer. The trick is to capture your dog in a way that the outside viewer can connect in a more personal way (other than the initial 'awww' reaction any dog lover might have to a cute picture of a dog).
