For this kind of scene, if the background allows, it's often better to get down closer to the level of the subject.

For this photo, you might get a similar effect from a tighter crop.

A tripod could help.

Also, it looks as if your flash fired. Does your camera have any manual exposure controls? If you expose for the available light, instead of relying on the flash, you'll catch more of the nice sunset colours and details.

This image has good composition in the foreground with the curve and matching shadow in the portal. Depth of field is great on this also, with good detail in the foreground as well as to the horizon. Classic travel pic. There must be a lot of history in the structures here.

This is nice the way the water picks up the colors from the sky. The person walking on the pier helps to add a sense of scale. Take a few extra seconds when you shoot this kind of scene and try to get the horizon level and it will look a lot better. If you get a photo edit program, you will be able to fix the unlevel shots, but it will lose some at each corner when you do that, so it's best to shoot it level to begin with.
