Life After Holloweenby Car54Comment by littlegett: This is a fun find. However the black/white treatment does it no justice. For me I want to see the bright and fading oranges of the pumpkins. Because we could look at this and not all identify they are pumpkins. If there was colour here and less noise I think this could be a funner image. But overall does not really have a lot of interest. |

Life After Holloweenby Car54Comment by Paul: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: I really do think this a scene worthy of capture, I also like where you have placed the intersecting straight lines....
Critical stuff: This comes across as a low quality image - I'm a fan of grain and of the use of blur but here there seems to be be little artistic intent; that is a little strange because the scene and the composition has it by the bucket load. I either feel cheated or taunted. I get the feeling that you could've made much more of this image but you have deliberately decided to withhold any beauty at all.
Overall: A frustrating image for me - if that was your intention, to communicate something that was devoid of beauty (spent perhaps?) then you have succeeded. I feel a little played - perhaps that's a good thing. |

just another dayby Car54Comment by Yo_Spiff: This has the soft, low res look of a photo shot many years ago. That look may not be intentional however. I see heavy compression artifacts around the roofline and in other places through the image. The 52k file size tells me this is indeed heavily compressed. That compression is what is killing all the detail. Always use the least amount of compression you can, but still come in under the challenge limit. |

Positives:So many interesting elements in this image - the deep perspective offered by the path leading all the way to the cityscape. The nonchalance of the figures in almost pure silhouette, the ashen tones and the blurry, old feel.
Critical Stuff: It might be my monitor but I'm seeing a lot of blocky artefacts in the sky.
Overall: A really compelling image, one that makes you want to linger to look - I also think the aspect ratio is brave and inspired. Excellent stuff. |
