Greetings from the Critique Club

First Impressions:

Very bright and vibrant colors

Technical (Comp, lighting, color, focus, Processing):

This shot really seems pretty technically sound. Your comp, lighting, color and focus all seem pretty much spot on.

Challenge:

Being a free study, yeah I think this met the challenge 

Artistic/Emotion:

The colors and the models pose really make this a lovely artistic shot, well done.

Summary:

8 challenges in and you are placing in the top 100 of a free study is not bad at all. You take excellent portraits. I would be very happy with this score in the free study as they are quite difficult to score really high in. Only a few sub 4 votes and they may very well have just been because the voter doesn̢۪t like the color or just isn̢۪t interested in portraits. In the end I think this scored well but the shot just lacked that something that makes the voter want to stay longer or keep coming back. You are off to a great start at DPC, I look forward to seeing your stuff in the future.

At first it seemed too smooth and the bubblewrap was a bit odd, but I gave it that extra second of thought. Seeing as she's wrapped in bubblewrap am I correct in assuming she's supposed to appear porcelain? If that's the intent you nailed your execution.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

Hello again. Yes, there really are other members of the Critique Club active at this time. Your images just seem to come up when I click the "Give me an image to critique" button. Although I do see Snaffles did get a crack at one of your images. Actually it's hard for us to tell if you have read them, as you don't mark any of them "helpful." but we'll keep trying if your image comes up in the queue.

Okay, back to work. Of course this is a cute image and I hope you didn't harm any of your glass. It is nicely seen and photographed although it probably would have been fun to see the primary, familiar Canon white lens off center perhaps a bit more, rather than dead center. But you selected that story-telling aspect as the best one to show off your idea and you were there and know what you could do in the scene.

certainly you are getting after the challenge compliments and that is always a welcome sight to see.

I will continue to look forward to seeing more of your work.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Interestingly enough, my dad was an OB/GYN, so funny that I end up with this shot to critique!

My main reaction to this shot is great concept but lacking in execution. The hands forming a heart are great, the composition certainly fills the frame (please don't tell your wife that! :-) The rings at almost perfect 1/3s towards lower right are wonderful. Your settings look like you're erring on the side of caution. Low ISO is good, shutter fast enough, plenty of dof. Maybe too much so? I feel here that the voters voted mostly on sentiment, because the photo is in focus and not too bad otherwise.

But I feel what killed this shot is the lighting. It looks harsh, almost fluorescent. My dad used to get all the medical journals and though the photos were very informative, iI know now that they were very lacking in photographic terms! Any light that casts a bluish cast on human skin, regardless of ethnicitiy, just doesn't look right.

FWIW, I would have tried to shoot either in natural daylight or with incandescents, then run a little bit of warming filter over the shot to give it a more natural glow.

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

Great shot and neat idea and title. I think this was underrated. I am posting this at Posthumous Ribbons, part III
