Midnight gathering...by photoleonComment by TooCool: From the Critique Club:
This is a very interesting picture from a couple of aspects. It has a very simple color scheme which is something I love! The overall blue tone seems to work very well here. Even the black looks blue which is very cool. It also has a neat softness to it although I think that this is from having a very shallow DOF. Did you do this on purpose?
What works agains this? I think that the overall darkness of the shot did not help your score. Even if you assume that all people have their monitors calibrated properly, it is still a little dark for the DPC voting community. It's also has a neat softness to it which is another thing that the community doesn't seem to cling to. DPC seems to be enamored by very sharp crisp imagery. I wish it wasn't so but that's the way it is. The lighting could use a little help from some fill in. Your shadows across the gum pieces are quite harsh. I think just a touch of fill lighting from something as simple as a reflecting white poster board would help soften up the shadows and improve the overall appearance.
I notice that you have one comment on the subject being too centered. I have to disagree with this person this time. While the rule of thirds is considered a photo standard, sometimes you achieve better results by breaking that rule. I believe that this is one of those times. Someone else commented that shooting at more of an angle would be an improvement and I think this person may be right.
Anyways I really like this shot and would love to see you turn it into a study type situation since you can set it up again and again with different variables. If you chose to do this, pleast post the results in the forums for us to see.
Yours

Radiating Green...by photoleonComment by TheMegalomaniac: Doesn't hold interest - perhaps if the cut side had some texture and the neon green was a raking light or going with the radiating them - you need more space on the left and less on the right |

Radiating Green...by photoleonComment by Titia: To me the radiation colour green and the apple colour green are fighting. It's a bit to much for my taste, though it's a good photo. 7 |
